I travel a lot in my e350 van by myself. Often and as much as I can, way away from other people. Biggest fear always is getting stuck or breaking down.

I have lots of recovery gear, hitch mounted winch and front and rear receivers. Still though, I like Utah a lot and I have been countless places with nothing to winch from. Have been looking for idea for that open, dry, sandy **** and came across this guy.

Obviously this idea worked for him on the video but curious what some of you think that have more experience than I do.

Van is about 10k when I travel. 2wd, no locker in the rear.......yet.

I could get all the **** for this for about 100 so it's probably worth it but still wondering what ya'll think.

Just the two solid tubing in the ground and the gang plate. Not the mud scoop thingie.

Not going to work in sand deep enough to drive those into. Not going to drive those into the rocks under the sand in Utah. The areas that are clay I can see it working.

Doesn't work at all if the vehicle isnt driving. Assuming you have solar, your winch will always work until you drain the battery and have to let it recharge for a day.

Maybe just invest in 1k feet of winch extensions to be able to get to an above ground rock.

I am mostly thinking about the sandy area in Utah and Arizona. For example, I want to go to White Pocket but have always been apprehensive cause I have seen a lot of stories of people getting stuck in the sand. There have been a few times when I almost got stuck and would have had to pull out the gear but got out. Only once did I then look around at the suroundings and think that I would have been screwed with not a rock or tree in sight.

I could always try to dig and bury a spare to winch from but I'd rather not. lol

I do know what you mean though. I can think of areas that this isn't going to work because of the rocky surface and rock under the sand.

I don't see that holding in dry sand. I've never tried or seen a sand anchor being used. Traction boards seem to work better than anything else, but you have to do some digging.
I have a set of those, and a full sized shovel. **** those little toothbrush sized ones.

Never needed to use them but I have also avoided a few places that I don't want to.

An ARB in the rear would ease my mind somewhat. I plan to get on installed over the new few months but won't make it in before my currently planned trip beginning next weekend.

What is? This is a discussion forum!! Discuss :flipoff2:

That recovery method. Driving stakes in the ground for an anchor as well as burying your spare or a log and similar things. They also detail using a rim like that or winding the rope between duals to use them as a winch.

Cool, so it's a proven method. Asking cause I had never seen it done, or heard of it, before I saw that video.

Effective on a 10k pd. stuck van? What was the Army pulling out like this other than striped Jeeps? Any idea?

I am going to make something and copy this guys stuff regardless. I can't hurt to try if I was to get stuck and it's cheap enough. Doesn't take up a lot travel space, etc.

They were usually illustrated with a 2.5 or 5 ton cargo truck. You could use it on anything that has duals or you can add an extra rim or something to wind the rope on. You would only be limited by the strength of the rope and the quality of your anchor job.

granspa told me about how he could get undtuck using a rope and a stick
twist the rope with the stick

lots of ways to get unstuck if you want to get unstuck :grinpimp:

If you have a winch build the anchor if you want.

The wheel thing is dumb and only needed if you dont have a functioning winch .

If your winch ****s the bed you can rig the wheel thing on the fly with some creativity.

Invest in winch extensions, soft shackles and a snatch block.

ETA: if you're totally convinced you need to pack this spare wheel contraption around, design and weld up a spacer to bolt on your spare tire as a dually. No reason to carry a whole extra space sucking wheel.
