Looking for input on this.
83 short box with a 1983 13 bolt Celica head on the factory 22r block fully rebuild back in 2017 ( bored .020 over .050mm on pistons ) and installed in 2020, Looks like I washed the bores on the re swap, (looks glazed up) down to 60 psi cranking compression, sub 30k on the engine so I figure to glaze break it and do a ring and valve job.
So quick search of (83 Toyota 22r) rings brings up a myriad of choices.
I got no problem waiting on rings to break in, and seeing that they are around $50 a set aint worried about cost.
What say you? thanx cb

Saw that, and as I said
A myriad of choices...
Of course fleabay is outta stock on .050
20 over...
Just trolling the waters here.
Thanks bud...

Did you do a leak down test to confirm the source of lost compression?

Also LCE uses Hastings for rings. May not be a bad option.

# 4 wouldn't hold
All 4 sets of compression rings were stacked thusly

And it was venting through the crankcase not the intake or exhaust?

Radiator.
#4 has 1 weak valve seat ( I forget which one) 2 direct pathways directly to the coolant passage.
Left chamber

#1 on left

Pretty sure that there was some compression sneaking by the oil control rings...

I used Hastings moly rings in a 22RE and a 2RZ. Not that I'm anyone to give advice on engine building.

22re Race Works sells Hastings and Total Seal rings. Call Jim and ask him what to run. Looks like he uses Hastings moly rings on his rebuilds and they are supplied in his rebuild kits.

Why dry?
School me.
Are you just referring to using their dry lube product?

So many questions. What was the gaps in the cylinders before installing on the pistons. Was the block sized to the pistons? Or did you bore it then order the kit? Are the rings the correct side up? Is there a tortilla in the engine?

Dropped off a long block to a Local engine builder I was referred to by my towns oldest race shop..

Bill of requested work was
Boil/prep block for .020 overbore.
Ballance entire rotating assembly
New pistons and rings
Fresh oem head w/ 3 angle grind
New oem front chest components

There was excessive end gap, rings were right side up cyl. Walls were glazed up.

Bump. Do rings or can they spin into this orientation? I pulled a 350 piston with the rings the same way.

Also me using a spring compressor.

Then I press it square to the deck and tighten the screw the rest of the way.

When I was in shop class a hunnert years ago they taught to evenly space the gaps around the circumference of the piston.

Theory was to slow the compressions path to the gally.

Someone here stated above it being ok or something.
I dont ever recall having the rings walk around on any piston.
But I've not done tons .

Makes sense, there's no pin in the gaps although I think I've seen it once somewhere...

Thanks
I knew it was familiar...
My old Square jug Maico 2 stroke 250..

I've got another builder engine.
I might have a use...
