Got the trolley off today. Seems to me it's a manufactured press trolley. Center hole is some huge thread. Not sure what thread the enerpac cylinders have on the outside.

The 4 hole pattern is not square. Measurements are center to center.

Any guesses as to what a safe working load would be for this press, so I can find a cylinder/jack for it?
Through pins are about 0.930" diameter.

I wouldn't do a bottle jack
you might be able to put a diptube on the pump, but it'll still be sucking fluid up which will suck in the summer, and probably won't work at all in the winter

figure on 40 or 50 ton
when the channel starts flexing then you chicken out and dial the relief valve back

Was wondering if that plate is what's left of a tie-rod style cylinder (because of the threaded "gland" hole). The non-square bolt pattern kinda made me think that's not it.

Got the lathe home and in my fab shop for now. Next phase will be swapping out my old lathe in my house basement, and that… will be a fun day and a long one I think.

I tried a different lifting this time and it tilted over a bunch. No turning back at that point and moved it into the shop puking oil out of the coolant tank and gear box oil out. Bright side I know the gear oil is clean and it has oil in it and I wouldn’t use what ever coolant fluid that was in the tank anyway.

I did lose a control box cover lid (has a dial with numbers on a ring in it.) looks to be tied into the motor wiring. Not sure what it’s for yet.

How did you lift it? Couldn't see the pick points in the earlier photos.

Looks like a really nice engine lathe, about the same size as mine. What are the specs?

doesn't look like a packing gland bore to me, it'd need a straight bored section and a shoulder for the packing to be jammed in, the shoulder could be a separate slug but the straight bored place for the packing to seal on the OD against kinda needs to be there I'd think...
betting on it fitting one of them externally threaded portapower ram bodies

looking at the pictures again I'd downsize my estimate to 20-30 ton, too
maybe make you a platform with return springs to use a bottle jack in there conventionally

Insert is the original bill of sale for it back in 1972 to the college for the specs. I think it weighed a bit more than originally due to the servo equipment added to it. The invoice said it weighed 2,920#. I’ll post good photos of those too.

The servos but I think the controller is missing for them. There’s a round multi pin connector on the side of the electrical box and I’m assuming it’s for that. No other way to control them that I can see.

I found an owners manual on line for free (took a while but I found it) and it showed to run a heavy cross bar or plate under the lathe bed near the chuck area. Then run a sling down to it straddling the bed. Then spur off another sling to the tail stick side of the lathe in the webbing. Reason for the bar under the bed is so you don’t crush or bend the acme threaded and other bars on the face of the bed. The weight of this lathe would in deed fawk them up.

Biggest issue is to keep a steel bar underneath a steel bed over near the chuck or gear box. Can’t allow it to skate underneath over to the tail stock end, specially once lifted up. So, I used a HD ratchet strap with the rod metal hooks on the ends and they barely fit over the steel bar. I wrapped the ratchet strap around the outside of the gear box to hook both ends of the steel bar and that held it in place.

This last time I wrapped a short lifting strap with steel loops at the ends around the backside of the lathe bed through the webbing. The lathe wanted to roll backwards when I tried lifting it with pallet forks under the bed. Looking at it, the 5 ho motor and much of the gear box are towards the backside of the lathe. Let’s just say that moving heavy machinery by yourself isn’t much fun.

I have to think out how I’m going to swap out my lathes tho. Nothing says a sigh of relief until the heavy precision machinery is on the floor

Ahh....that was it. Govdeals is one of the few that I check religiously every few days.

I doubt you can loose on that deal, even if it's not fixable. There has to be several grand worth of good, sellable parts on that thing.

What type of gov facility is it coming out of?

Its coming out of the University of Alabama.

So far, I haven't found a 20K forklift in the area to rent. Anyone have any idea what I might need to pay a rigging company to get this out of the ground floor of a building and placed on my trailer?

Probably a couple grand.

Call a tow truck company. A buddy of mine has used them to move several heavy pieces of equipment around. Maybe you can get it up on skates and use them to pull it outside if it’s a straight shot.

Can it be hoisted up by a crane or only moved by forklift?

What about renting a telehandler to move it? Try United rental or sunbelt etc. I’ve used them to move heavy equipment and craned as well. They can deliver to your job site and pick it up when you’re done

That mill weighs 20k or?

16.5k

Sounds like the university has already hired someone to pull it outside and out of the way of the new machine. A major major bummer is that I am unable to be down there at that time to have them just load it straight onto my trailer.

A local crane operator quoted me $1200 to load it provided it can be completed in his six hour minimum which strikes me as quite reasonable and basically a wash compared to renting a big forklift.

Can you hire a hotshot to move it for you?

could be really easy if the towing company does heavy towing, and has a semi rated "rotator" style tow truck. pick, swing, lower onto trailer, easy peasy, and definitely capable of the load. may or may not be competitive with the $1200 quote from above.

That's really cheap. I've seen riggers quote many times that amount at auctions where they'll already be on site moving shot for other buyers at the same time.

Yep this is true for sure, funny thing is, I never paid these guys at three different auctions I was at a bunch of years ago. They helped me load stuff I bought and said don’t worry about it. Only one of those auctions I had a truck bed and trailer load of equipment and machines. Felt sorry for me I think but I thanked them a bunch non the less.

But the two biggest machines I bought at auctions was my recent purchase Bridgeport mill and the leblond lathe. The mill they loaded for me but I had to baby sit the forklift operator as he laid over a huge pedestal bolder 12” grinder. But in all fairness it was mounted on a tiny pos pedestal for a cHiNa 6” grinder. Stupid top heavy. I helped him stand it back up. Luckily the only damage was the switch box on it. And the lathe I did myself.

No doubt it’s a big issue with machines at auction if they don’t offer loading options there. I’m positive that’s why no one bought up all of these leblond lathes first time they were listed. They probably would’ve brought more revenue also. But hey, colleges know better than you do. Their loss may gain.

Measured today (quickly).

Threads look to be 3 1/4" and 12 TPI and straight thread. (mostly just posting here so I can find that info later).

looks nice!

Nice load of tools, I think someday that might happen to all of us that collect tools and equipment, it’ll move on to another owner that I hope can appreciate it and use it

Can you refill those tanks?
I hope my children will continue to enjoy my stuff.

I am hoping I'll be able to swap those tanks with my supplier. I have an account.
You think I'll have problems?

filling that acet one you'll prolly have to sell a couple of those kids, but apart from the natural tendency for welding shops to continuously accuse their customers of theft you shouldn't run into trouble

Really depends on the shop.

We had issues trying to get airgas to swap out bottles that didnt have airgas stickers on them. Industrial source never questioned it.

Depends on the company name on the tank up top. I’d for sure ask your guy but just be prepared they may deny them.

Yep, CK welding same way.

If your guy denies them then search around as there may be a company near you that will.

That would be extremely brass to accuse a customer of stealing the tanks. Not saying it doesn’t happen but it’s not for them to say **** unless they have proof

Dang, I’m used to dealing with my Airgas guy local to me. Today I had to go to one for consumables for a welder st work in the city. HOLY fawk did that experience suck ass.

No doubt a DEI hire and this black dude was dumb as a box of rocks. It was downright embarrassing. He had absolutely no idea how to look anything up. It’s not a welder I’m familiar with so I could eyeball fawk tips in packages to maybe get the correct ones. But I gave him the model number and he would just literally ghost out. A bunch of “um well errrr…. I’m uhhhhh…. It’s maybe um er uh um…” then disappear out back like he’s looking for help. He’d show back up after around 8 min give or take and act like I had just walked in.

I ended up looking up the parts in his catalog book and managed to get most everything I needed. Nozzle were out of stock

I don’t usually bitch at companies but I sent Airgas an email today. They’re gonna end up shuttering stores if they keep this crap up

These were from a different welding supply in a different state and airgas thought that was a big deal. Industrial-source....."yea dude, we got our own stickers we'll slap on there  "

Industrial source a while back. Needed a torch hose repair kit. Kid that answered fed me a line of **** about osha and how repairing torch hoses just didnt work. But he would be happy to sell me a new hose :homer:

Call airgas "yea I got 5 of them on the shelf"

basically every time "you got a ***le for that, nope I ain't touching it"
as if
then they give you a terrible price when you do get the one guy that'll deal with a walk in without an account

plumbing supply swaps them out at actual okay prices (30 bucks for the big oxygen, 60-70 for argon) and doesn't give a **** long as the hydrotest is okay, 25 bucks for hydro if it ain't (iirc acet is a lot more because of the filling in the tanks)

A ***le?

They zap the barcode, see if its a owner or not and you are on your way.
