Have any of you been keeping up with Shannon Campbell's Scrambler build? I believe the episode below is his first episode and basically everything after this episode is the scrambler build.

Figured it would drum up a good discussion and the thread can morph as the videos continue on.

I will start and say, wow, not only is he a good fabricator and he can move at one hell of a pace (we already knew that) but I enjoy his tool setup. Today we usually see everything cut out on a plasma table, he still does everything by hand which is refreshing to see, he doesn't use a plasma cutter often, and no computers to cut **** out. I will also say he is really open to sharing his knowledge, if you ask a question in the comments you will most likely get an answer and there are no secrets. He will tell you how and why he did things. Usually top guys like that keep it secret, vague or flat out don't answer. He did a live video once and he was literally answering question by question. I remember full hydro and road worthiness coming up and he explained how he mechanically slows the steering down, he uses an orbital that is a 3 turn setup vs 2 turn like his race car, etc. He is very open about his stuff.

Lastly, I don't think I have seen a build like this, it is hardcore, yet versatile. The hardcore aspect of it is big HP, big boy, lightweight race axles, tube chassis, full hydro (that will probably be good on road) and has good geometry.

Usually a build like that is hindered by being uncomfortable, lacks fuel range, and isn't good in inclement weather but this will have a top and windshield, AC, heat, a fuel tank that holds over 30 gallons, can seat 4, badass sound system with a high tech head unit and he even plans to tow a home built overland trailer with it. I don't know if I have seen a rig that can probably party with the best of them and then go down the road in luxury. Maybe we will start to see more builds like this in the future.

started to watch... Then got bored of the thumbnails being all about his wife's outfits... I guess sex sells...
that the biggest reason i dont watch his channels much. or i fast forward everytime she comes in. i like his builds and thought process for sure. but **** he could do shorter vids. ahhahaah

I agree, they are long videos, I try to stick around for the tech and info he provides because I think it is better hardcore tech then anything else on YT.

I also skip through all the wife and tangent stuff related to his house, food etc. I do enjoy watching it aside from that, I think if he had a good editor and left out the vlog portion he would have some great 20-35 minute videos.

The only thing that throws me off is no body mounts. Full attach everywhere. I would want it "isolated" a bit for the street.

Other than that .... absolutely killer build, well done, great knowledge, and honest asssessment (for good and bad) of his own work.

I have been following along. I do appreciate his tool spread and damn that Piranha seems handy as hell.

Yes they’re long but it’s not mundane long (tech part, at least) some guys have long videos and it’s just mundane watching them chug along but Shannon is describing or saying what he’s thinking all along and I find it really helpful as someone who learns a lot by watching.

It’s also helpful to know even the most experienced pro messes up with dumb ****.

I like his goal of little to no nuts, everything is tapped or nut is welded so working on it is easy. Prioritizing consistent bolt sizes too. Also some of his cable and line routing management was helpful to learn. Some blending techniques and his prep strategies were things I picked up too.

Overall I’m willing to put up with the random vlog content because I feel like it’s my learning style the way he shows his tech, and obviously he knows his **** so it’s not like some rando that I have to question if what he’s preaching or doing is actually the right way.

I like how he called out some guy who told him to mount his rad not hard mount but explained his way instead

I doubt it is this guy, I dont remember a shannon ripping people off on the old site but I highly doubt it is him.
Agreed. Never heard anything bad about Shannon. Met him a handful of times and had a very good friend that worked for him for years...... From everything I've ever heard or seen of him, Shannon's a stand up guy.

Im always happy when he includes slight mess ups or having to redo something. Makes me feel way better about my build

I've learned more for his vids than any others for sure

I'll watch em every so often. Just like near everything else on youtube, I'm quick to bump things ahead a bit if somebody starts rambling.

I watch them all. I enjoy the little fab technics that I've not considered before.
What I respect most is Shannon's old methods of building a car. No fancy CRC plasma or bendtech just knowledge and skill. I think that connects with many of us grassroots guys in the hobby.

I am curious of the high pinion gear metallurgy in an on road application. Would there be accelerated wear?

my first time hearing about shannon cambell was when i was deployed to haiti 1997 i think. building a road, anyway he build some red jeep. at least i think it was read and get crazy travel out of leaf springs by mounting the spring onto the axle and such. so i been a fan for may a year...

Yuup....that was back in the heyday. That was 'Pinky'....tube frame, 1/4 elliptical in the rear. Full width 10 bolt/ semi float 14, welded diffs, injected SBC.

Didn't he run over another rig or something too? On Chocolate Thunder or something.

He did an overview of that jeep in one of his videos, talked about competing with it in top truck challenge and wheeling with Ned Bacon and Rick Pewe, etc. I definitely enjoyed that part of the video.

It would be cool to have him come on here and answer some questions....but just getting him onto youtube was a big enough feat. People asked for years and he finally did it recently.

Have any of you been keeping up with Shannon Campbell's Scrambler build?

No .

I knew the entire family, when he had a family .

Great people, especially the original wife and kids .

But then ....

If you wanna be a shannon nut swinger you are about 10 yrs late to the party

Could care less what he does now .

Just my opinion .
