Pablo the F-450

Sure did bury Pablo! Whatever you do, don't wash him as he will just get more bougie and start expecting detail work or to be treated like a track car...

We need a cold start video? :smokin:
It's not really cold anymore. Nights are above freezing. Next time I have one that's real cold I'll film me turning the key or whatever.

With the new batteries and terminals there isn't any drama, Pablo just jumps out of bed.

Pablo is in these pictures, so it counts right? This is what Pablo has been slaving away at.

Also, Pablo learned a new skill today. Now he can spread driveway slate right out of the bed. Little hand raking and it's done, no tractor needed. 12cu/yds of slate spread that way today. Neat.

Pablo is the best, and has paid for himself probably twice over. Pablo is the best cheap truck.

Pablo's starter has become hit or miss, often requiring some love taps with a bfh to get it to work. Time for pablo to rail a line and get back to work.

Old vs new.

This is a new "2 bolt" denso style starter for the 7.3. Found it via some forums, claiming it was better than the old "3 bolt" style mitsu starters. Picked up the new one via rockauto for less than $200, and I can confrim, it's way faster than the old starter. Similar to the 6.4 starter upgrade for 6.0 trucks.

Check the length of your starter bolts, I had to buy longer bolts to work with the denso style starter. The stock bolts only had a few threads engages in the aluminum.

That didn't even occur to me. I'll go back and look at some point.

The mounting ears on the denso didn't seem substantially thicker, felt like it threaded in enough.

Mine was an 01 superduty, could be different. Looks like i misremembered on the thread engaged, but it was less.

Thanks for the reference pics. Looks like enough thread engagement but more would probably be better. If it falls out I'll do that.

Access is not great in this truck, really crammed in there against the frame, despite being on the bottom.

I sold a Lincoln sa200 to a guy , pulled up in a obs f250 with a 351w and a zf5. Anyhow first thing I noticed was his starter hanging by the battery cable when he pulled in. So its not a good look :lmao:
I don't want to be left stranded anywhere, but damn that'd be a good story, lol.

I know the 6.5TDs have an issue with the bolts loosening up. Unfortunately, the end result is breaking the ears off the bellhousing and then you're really fooked. It looks like the mounting for the 7.3 is thicker, though.

no unfortunately the 6.2 and 6.5 are worse than that. the starter bolts to the block so if the starter bolts are loose it can break the block. So full replacement or welding were the only options before, now leroy diesel makes a engine plate that adapts it over to a medium duty starter that bolts to the plate to mimic the ones that go into the bellhousing on the medium duty trucks. Sometimes you get lucky and the bolt holes just need drilled tapped or helicoil but if it snaps the block its bad. Most failures are just from vibration loosening the bolts or people replace the starter at some point and don't put the bracket back on end of starter that braces it to the block.

Idk what it's called, I just know the sound it makes when it starts.

In the Cummins world I'd call it a flywheel housing, but ferds are weird and dumb. It's the aluminum thing that the engine, bellhousing, and starter all bolt to so they can make noise together.

Yeah I dont know the official one there either. I've heard them called some colorful things before but I think backing plate was kinda common. I know a friend came up with new names when he was buttoning up his rebuilt engine install and found it laying in with some parts that needed to go on. I think he used a grinder to make it slip in from the bottom with all the bolts removed except for 2. His might have been steel, it's been like 30 years.

Pablo had a headlight go out, so he got some new led bulbs. I was shocked to see the two bulbs I removed were dated 97. Can't believe that they are original headlight bulbs.

As a reward, Pablo and Pablito transported my gantry crane to its new temporary home for the mayhem bus project.

Pablo rocks.
