I'm pretty limited on my ability to identify auto parts, so I need some help. Pulled this out of a Cherokee I bought to put a ford 8.8 that I had already. I thought it was a Dana 35, but after getting it out I noticed someone added the shock mounts because the XJ mounts behind the axle not one in front and one in back. I think it might be a Chrysler 8.25 because that is another popular swap. It is supposed to have a trac-loc locker, but it didn't seem to be working correctly but I haven't had a chance to pop the cover yet. Is it an 8.25?

Most 90s XJs got them. There is a spline count change from 27 to 29 on the shafts but they are all pretty much interchangeable. Not a terrible axle, better then the 35 IMO.

I want to say only XJs with 4 wheel ABS got the 35 instead of the 8.25 after 1990/91ish. I don't remember, that's filed in my noodle archive with all the useless information and Seinfeld quotes I no longer remember.

I am pretty sure this axle didn’t come in this XJ. I think it is a 92. Someone added shock mounts to it, or I wouldn’t have even questioned it being the stock axle. Huh, now I got something worth more than I thought. Thanks!

The axle tubes on a D35 are 2.5" and the ones on an 8.25 are 3" if I'm recalling my useless pile of random Cherokee memories correctly.

It looks like a D35 to me though.

Cmon that XJ Dana 44 is folk lore...Jeep made like ten of them.

It's definitely an 8.25 from the shape and rubber butt plug. 100%

Factory shock mounts are some big ol fangs that hang down but that an XJ think regardless of the axle type.

I have personally seen a renix xj with a factory 44 rear, only one I have ever seen. I had a 8.25 in an xj on 33s for a while, I was very unkind to that axle and never had any problems with it. Welded the spiders and sent it.

Like 5000 rpm side step clutch to do donuts on pavement unkind, it didnt complain. Much stronger than a d35.

I have seen a couple too of the Renix era trucks and a couple of MJs in real life. That's about it.

Post Renix seems like everything got an 8.25" unless it was a top of the line model. I think those got a 35 due to the ABS.

I agree I think it's a pretty decent axle for a moderate build. Easy to work on with the threaded adjusters, decent aftermarket, etc.

Not a 44 but certainly better then a 35. I wouldn't go out of my way of getting rid of it but certainly wouldn't dump a bunch of money into it either.

I ran one with 33s and 4.56s for awhile with no carnage.
