    47 3 ton GMC Firetruck

So my Dad wanted something to tinker with... I guess?

Enter 47 3 ton firetruck. I think 10k miles on it. No heater (weird for a Canadian truck?). 5 Window. Has the pump mounted in the front of the box off a big transfer case (not a PTO). Seller claimed was 'stuck in neutral' but we noticed that oil was pouring out the rear output of the tcase when it was on the tow truck and the shifter was disconnected. Original working siren, 2 speed rear. Has a bunch of hose on the top of the tank. Has hose on reel at the back. Has chrome fire nozzles. Pretty complete.

Got it home and started checking it out. The input and output to the transfer case have a ton of play. Bearings and seals basically non existent. Hooked up the shifter but couldn't get it to engage the rear drive. Started taking it apart to hopefully source some bearings and seals. The inside of the transfer case is pretty rusty, but the thing is just going to be a Sunday driver for now, so if we can get bearings and seals, good enough. Change the oil a few times and put a magnet in the bottom. The brakes work, as good as any 40s or 50s truck.

So only thing done so far is to pull the output assembly, shifter assembly, inspection cover. Tried to pull the input assembly out of the tcase, but the yoke needs to come off to get it out. Tried a 2 jaw puller, with a clamp on the jaws, and a heat and beat. No luck so far. Maybe try a different puller. Maybe have to pull the whole tcase and put it in the press.

For now he just wants to drive it a couple times I think. We are discussing options for it down the road including gutting the inside of the box and turning it into a dump box. I think that a chassis swap is the answer if he ever wants to drive it more than a couple miles. Would look at 73-87 2wd dually or 88-98 2wd dually or maybe superduty 2wd dually.

The picture attachement / insert shit on this forum software is a complete mystery to me.
